African Liberation Day
African Liberation Day (ALD) was founded by Kwame Nkrumah and the Convention Peoples Party, April 15, 1958, on the occasion of the First Conference of Independent African States which was held in Accra, Ghana. Eight “independent” states, Ethiopia, Egypt, Ghana, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia attended it. The 15th of April was declared Africa Freedom Day,
“to mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement in Africa, and to symbolize the determination of the People of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.”
ALD was therefore born as a manifestation of resistance to capitalism, imperialism, colonialism, settler-colonialism, racism, zionism and apartheid. A non-governmental conference, the All-African People’s Conference, also held in Accra in December of 1958 reaffirmed the revolutionary integrity of Africa Freedom Day and quickened the pace of the African independence movement. Dr. W.E.B. Dubois correctly stated in his Message to the All-African People’s Conference that it was the 6th Pan-African Congress, a new series of it, meeting for the first time on African soil. [W.E.B. Dubois. World and Africa. Page 294-297] Nkrumah emerged from the Conference as the leader of the Pan-African Movement, a position which he held until his transition on April 27, 1972.
On May 25, 1963, spearheaded by Kwame Nkrumah, thirty-one African Heads of State convened a Summit Meeting to found the Organization of African Unity (OAU). They reaffirmed the revolutionary integrity of Africa Freedom day, renamed it African Liberation Day and changed its date of celebration to May 25th. As the OAU was to act as a framework towards the political unification of all African states, ALD was again reaffirmed as a mass institution in the African Revolution to be honored and celebrated in every corner of Africa, the African Diaspora and the World. The African Heads of States in attendance at that first OAU Meeting also reaffirmed Nkrumah’s proclamation at Ghana’s Independence Celebration that the independence of any one African state was meaningless without the total liberation and unification of the African Continent. The A-APRP (GC) also affirms that this independence is meaningless without the total liberation and unification of 1.3 billion African People who are scattered, suffering and struggling in every corner of Africa and the African Diaspora.
Since its founding, African Liberation Day manifestations, large and small, governmental and non-governmental, revolutionary, reformist and reactionary, have been held in every corner of Africa, the African Diaspora and the World. Following in this revolutionary mass tradition and demonstrating the unbreakable bonds of unity between all oppressed yet struggling peoples of the world against a common enemy, and for the liberation, unity and dignity of African People, we have organized and/or participated in African Liberation Day manifestations in 1972, and since 1976.
